Are Fear and Anxiety Holding You Back?

Is fear holding you back in your career? NECBT can help.
Oftentimes, we can let fears get in the way of achieving our goals and living the lives that we have envisioned. While there are certainly times when outside circumstances can influence how we live, it is often fear and anxiety that hold us back. Fear and anxiety are based in irrational thinking, and therefore, can be changed. At NECBT, we have had much success in helping people to challenge their irrational thoughts and beliefs at the core of these fears using our unique Interpersonal Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(I-CBT).

Many people are afraid of traveling using specific types of transportation. Following 9/11, it was common for people to be fearful and anxious when flying. Other people are afraid of driving on the highway, or driving any type of long distance. Some are fearful of traveling on trains or on a subway. All of these fears can hold a person back, both professionally and personally.

A number of jobs require that people travel by airplane or train to make presentations and interact with other branches of a company. When an individual is overcome with anxiety and fear about traveling, it can keep them from performing the tasks required as a part of his or her job. When a person is afraid of driving, unless he or she lives in a region with an excellent public transportation system, that person may find themselves either extremely isolated from or dependent on others. Neither circumstance is healthy or productive.

NECBT’s I-CBT takes the basic tenets of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and adds an interpersonal aspect. At NECBT, we believe that therapy is more successful when the patient both likes and trusts their therapist. It is far easier to examine and then change one’s core beliefs once a rapport is built between patient and therapist. Core belief systems are at the root of our irrational thinking. Although we can begin to examine surface thoughts that may be affecting and contributing to the current presenting problem without rapport, to approach the deeper causes, it is best to have a strong relationship between patient and therapist. After that rapport is built, the real work can begin. Soon, a patient will be able to change their thoughts and begin to overcome their fears.

While we often speak on the blog about more generalized mental health symptoms related to specific disorders, such as Depression, General Anxiety Disorder, PTSD, and ADHD, we know that often it can be the seemingly everyday situations that hold us back and affect our lives. While Anxiety may not plague all of us daily, it may arise, repeatedly, in specific scenarios. This is treatable, and it is important for us to work toward overcoming specific phobias. Only then can we live our lives to our fullest potential.

If you or someone you know is battling a specific phobia or anxiety related to a specific area of your life, I-CBT can help. Live your life to the fullest!
